On March 29, 2016 students of the Moscow Institute of Architecture visited the construction sites of D2 Technopark neighborhood in Innovation Center Skolkovo, as part of the Urban Campus project, with the assistance of ODAS Skolkovo and general contractor RD Construction.
Future architects and today’s students of two departments – Architecture of Public & Residential Buildings and Reconstruction & Restoration of Architectural Ensembles – visited the construction sites of residential quarters 9, 10 and 11 of IC Skolkovo and saw with their own eyes the development of the neighborhood where the elite of Russian and overseas science will soon be working.
Co-founder and chief architect of UNK project Yuli Borisov, architect of quarter 10. He reminded that the architectural tender, resulting in the selection of ten architectural concepts from different bureaus for the ten residential quarters of Skolkovo, was not easy. The architects were tasked with fitting comfortable houses having panoramic glazing and surrounding grounds (not taller than 3-5 stories) into circles envisaged in the master plan; they also had to minimize the physical fencing of the land plots and to provide for 50,000 sq m of housing on 50,000 sq m of the territory. To address the problem, the architects suggested the placement of buildings at two different levels. The ground floor is represented by a podium that features an entrance lobby, an office, utility premises and an electric automobile garage. Towering above this foundational platform is the main residential volume.
According to the architect, the project’s knowhow is the flair of an offbeat architectural project, notwithstanding the use of mainly homemade plain materials and smoothly running processes.
IN THE COURSE OF AUTHOR’S OVERSIGHT WE MAY FURTHER ELABORATE ON THE DESIGN SOLUTIONS WHICH ARE ALWAYS AGREED WITH THE ARCHITECTURAL MASTERMIND. THE POINT IS THAT THE DESIGN IS NOT ONLY ABOUT THE ARCHITECT’S IDEA; IT ALSO DEPENDS ON THE MARKET OF MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES CHANGING AT THE STAGE OF DESIGN AND DLEIVERY. THIS IN TURN INFLUENCES THE CLIENT’S VISION. PROFESSIONALISM OF THE BUILDER – IN OUR CASE THIS IS RD CONSTRUCTION – DEFINITELY HELPS ADDRESSING NUMEROUS PROBLEMS EMERGING THROUGHOUT THE AUTHOR’S OVERSIGHT, WHEREAS EXPERIENCED SPECIALISTS SUCCEED IN DELIVERING A PROJECT AS CLOSE TO THE ARCHITECT’S ORIGINAL DESIGN AS POSSIBLE.
Bringing MARCHI students to the construction sites of Skolkovo was initiated by NGO Urban Campus. In the words of Director Urban Campus Mikhail Lazarenko, the purpose of the new educational project in architecture and urban design is promoting the concepts of urban development and assisting in putting the best of these into practice.
